Why the otter is the symbol of love
There's a very concrete reason. In the wild, sea otters have a habit that melted the whole Internet: they hold paws while they sleep. This behavior, called "rafting", stops them drifting away from each other while they sleep. Two otters floating while holding hands has become the very image of faithful love and tenderness.
So giving an otter to your partner is a way of saying "I don't want to drift away from you" without having to put it into words. Hard to get any cuter.
